Nicaragua Travel Guide

While memories of the 1979 Sandinista Revolution still evoke images of work crew comandantes and communist sympathies, the Nicaragua of today is a very different an rapidly changing place. The country is embracing a deluge of tourist dollars that is set increase as word gets around - Nicaragua is cool! In the North Central Mountains are the source of huge rivers that run down to the Mosquito Coast, a region of dense rainforest on the Caribbean coast, where trees often reach a height of 200ft. Lake Nicaragua has 310 beautiful islands the largest of which, Ometepe is a major tourist magnet. The twin Corn Islands in the Caribbean are also beautiful. Fringed with white coral and palm trees they too are popular with holidaymakers. The climate varies according to altitude, with the Pacific lowlands always extremely hot but fresh and green during the wet season. The Mostquito Coast is hot and wet for most of year and the mountains cooler and pleasant. For an authentic Caribbean experience, the Corn Islands slightly off the coast afford travellers with fine beaches and great diving opportunities. And while its underdevelopment may be Nicaragua's greatest shortcoming for visitors, it also means lower prices for those on a budget.

There is a freshness about the country where the smiles are still warm, the questions still honest and the eyes wide open, not dulled by the fatigue of thoughtless travellers. Beautiful sites like Volcan Masaya, the Corn Islands, the island of Ometepe, Rio San Juan and the Pacific beaches are matched by some of Central America's oldest towns including Granada and Leon. It's the contrasts that make Nicaragua; the highlands of the north; the lowlands to the south and east; liberal Leon and conservative Granada. In part, these differences divide the country, they inspired the revolution and continue to impact the country today and make such a pleasure to explore.
